Directed by Shane Black, staring Robert Downey JR, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce and Sir Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, Jon Favreau and Paul Bettany.
Though this is the third Iron Man film this will be the fourth time we have seen Tony Stark after his appearance in the Avengers. The story follows the Extremis Comic book story arc which I have read many times, what they add to it in this adaptation is the Mandarin. For those of you unfamiliar with this villain he is a mad scientist with magical potential sourced from his ten rings. Mandarin is the new terrorist and the biggest threat Tony has had to face. Along side him is the Extemis which actually follows the comics pretty closely though if you have read the comics then some characters have been slightly changed but not that far from the source material.
The first Iron man film was amazing, setting up the character very well and it’s own stand alone film, however the second film was disappointing as it was rushed and clearly just a platform for The Avengers. Though Iron Man 3 marks phase two of the Marvel films it is it’s own film in it’s own right. There are references to the Avengers of course and one of the issues with Tony this time is his inability to sleep following his fall from the wormhole.
If you were to ignore the Avengers, Iron Man 3 is a nice round up of the three films with lots of references and cameos from people who were in the first Iron Man film, it’s very well done and Shane Black has done an excellent job. Hardly surprising given that Downey has said in a recent interview when they were making the first one Favearu and himself made several calls to Black asking for help. Now that the three of them are working together again tou can notice a massive difference. Particularly when Black and Downey worked together for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and the style is very similar.
Guy Pearce is very very good in it, along with Rebecca Hall though much more a minor character then she was in the comics. Sir Ben Kingsley is also very good with his voice well created.
I found this film to be really amazing, loving every moment of it, upon until one moment which I won’t say for spoilers sake in this one moment it nearly ruined the entire thing for me. I can see why they did it but still can’t help but feel disappointed Only those in good knowledge of the comics will be aware of this change otherwise you will not notice it.
The ending to the film, again no spoilers, leaves a lot of questions to be answered. However one question I had throughout the film which never got answered was why the Avengers never got involved with any of it, no cameos no nothing from the Avengers.
The intro to this film is not like the other marvel films which makes it better as you don’t really expect any of what happens.
However apart from one disappointment this it’s an outstanding piece of work and I shall be going to see it again this week. I would love to write more but I don’t want to take away any of the magic and nor do i want to accidentally let slip a spoiler.
OVERALL**** Would have given it five but for that one moment.
